Happo-nings at PRSA Go Beyond HAPPO

As part of Help a PR Pro Out, I’ve been working with the Public Relations Society of America to highlight some of their free programs that help public relations professionals with their job search. This post highlights some of the free, and some not-so-free tools PRSA offers to those on the hunt.

PRSA is proud to be among the many industry organizations and professionals who are supporting HAPPO. For PRSA, though, helping industry professionals — both members and non-members — is part of our DNA. Every day, we offer thought leadership, industry information, professional development opportunities and job seeking tools, many of which are freely available. Consider this your invitation to start taking advantage of them!

For example, our Jobcenter is a premium, micro-targeted job bank that enables candidates to post their resumes at no cost. A posting on the PRSA Jobcenter puts job seekers in front of active recruiters for the industry’s top jobs at agencies, corporations, associations, colleges, health care organizations and government.

Candidates can then search hundreds of public relations and communications job postings and sign up for job alerts that automatically notify them of targeted opportunities by email. Feeds can cull job leads in target areas such as communications, public relations, media relations and community relations, as well as individualized areas.

Candidates also gain free access to the Jobcenter’s career library, which offers a wealth of information from leading industry experts. Resources include articles covering key professional developments, strategies and tactics, a series of job hunting tips and a report on current salary information.

Job seekers also can get expert advice directly from designated job mentors — practicing public relations professionals with special expertise and career training to help them develop job hunting strategies that fit individual needs at all career levels. Candidates also can ask the experts individual questions targeted to driving their personal job aspirations and searches. The more than 120 questions already answered by the experts detail networking strategies, job interview performance and career transition techniques, among other topics.

Public relations professionals also need to stay on top of industry trends and advancements, but for job seekers it can mean the difference between an interview and an offer. PRSA offers free access to a wide range of webinars, available live and via playback. Of course, PRSA also offers a comprehensive menu of professional development opportunities, conferences and the industry-leading International Conference.

For up-to-date insights into learning milestones and opportunities, PRSA also maintains the comPRehension blog. And, particularly for those starting out in their careers, the prnewpros blog offers targeted perspective from fellow young professionals.

PRSA also makes available a Podcast Center offering a full menu of free podcasts putting current events and topics a keystroke away for job hunters and other professionals. Combining thought leadership with professional development, the podcasts, available via RSS feed, can keep professionals up to speed and give job seekers a decisive jump on the competition.
