Holiday Kids Foodie Friday

Today on Foodie Friday, we’re going to Pasadena, CA, Chicago, IL, and Columbia, SC, where Maya, Addie and Brooke are busy baking holiday goodies for their families. See what they want for Christmas and learn about their favorite things to do around the holidays. Their answers are in their own words and really show their personalities. Be sure to read about the Turudivis celebration in South Carolina.

Maya from Pasadena; 4-3/4 (according to her)

Which December holiday is your favorite?

Christmas

What most excites you about the holidays?

Getting presents from Santa.

Is there a family tradition that you really like?

Going to get our Christmas tree at the same place every year and coming home and trimming the tree. (And yes, “trimming” was Maya’s word.)

Can you tell me about a favorite food that you get to eat at the holidays?

I love having hot cocoa with marshmallows next to the Christmas tree.

Do you help with the holiday cooking? How? What’s your favorite thing to cook?

I like to help make cookies. I get the ingredients. This year I learned to crack the eggs and I do the mixing. And, I’m the official oven checker.

What are you wishing for this month?

A new scooter.

Addie from Chicago; age 5 ½ (that half is important)

Which December holiday is your favorite?

Christmas because I get all the presents because presents are the best and I might get special wrapping paper, too. I love Santa Claus, the toys, the costumes, the toys, the dollies, the lovies, and Cookie the Elf. (It took a very long time to get here...she kept saying "my birthday", which isn't until April.

What most excites you about the holidays?

Making Santa the Rudolph the red-nosed cookies and making Cookie the Elf chocolate chip cookies because she likes to poop chocolate chips in my mama's sink.

Is there a family tradition you really like? Tell me about it.

I love to make gingerbread houses with my friends because we use frosting, not glue, to put it all together.

Can you tell us about a favorite food you get to eat at the holidays?

My favorite food is spaghetti and meatballs, no matter what time of year it is, but my mama makes it more often during the holidays.

Do you help with holiday cooking? How? What’s your favorite thing to cook?

I do. I'm a big helper in the kitchen. We make lots of cookies and I crack all of the eggs. I never get egg shells in the dough and my mama is always proud of me.

What are you wishing for this month?

Dollies that look like my mom, my dad, Paulina (my babysitter), and me.

Brooke from Columbia, SC; age 9

Which December holiday is your favorite?

My favorite holiday is Christmas.

What most excites you about the holidays?

What excites me the most about the holidays is that I get to see my family and my elf, Cinnamon, comes to visit.

Is there a family tradition you really like? Tell me about it.

I actually have quite a few. The first one is we drive through the Saluda Shoals lights (a local park) and see Santa. My mom and I do holiday baking and give the treats to neighbors and friends. We also do this made-up holiday with two other families and combine our last names so it is called “Turudivis.” (Turners, Rudisells and Davises) At Turudivis we frost cookies, play games and exchange gifts.

Can you tell us about a favorite food you get to eat at the holidays?

My favorite food we eat is the steak my dad makes for Christmas Eve dinner.

Do you help with holiday cooking? How? What’s your favorite thing to cook?

I usually help my dad cook, but during the holidays I mainly help my mom bake. My favorite thing to bake is Magic Cookie Bars, which my mom always made when she was little, too.

What are you wishing for this month?

I wish to spend time with my family and get everything on my Christmas list.
